My sister – the one who spent a semester with us during her high school years – texted me this on Monday. And it made me smile.

Why? Because of the pie conversation.

Screen shot of a text that says:

Happy start of a holiday week!

You too! Got plans? Kate has us all organized. Groceries bought. I get to try my hand at pie dough today. Haven't made pie in years!!

What kind of pie are you making? I just made pumpkin last night :) we're gonna go to moms on Thursday

When she decided to homeschool with my kids that semester, she asked if she could learn to bake.

It was something she really wanted to try, and never had the opportunity.

And the idea that she could indeed count it as “school” was cool…  especially since she hated school.

And while pie wasn’t on that original list,  she did learn to make cakes, cheese cake, cookies, and our favorite Amish White Bread recipe.

It tickles me that she later did learn to make pie.  That her confidence and learning continued into her adult life.

If your teen loves to bake, or you are looking to package up all that holiday baking you do together over the high school years into a credit (or half credit),  here’s  a little inspiration  – the course description I used.

Culinary Skills: Baking
Through mentored and independent hands-on projects, provides instruction in the fundamentals and principles of the art and science of cooking and baking, with an emphasis on baking from scratch. Projects included a variety of cake, cheese cake, cookies, and bread recipes.

In my sister’s case, she did enough to warrant a half-credit. But you may have more, or if less, you may want to bundle it up with other cooking skills into a Culinary Arts credit. Just depends on your situation.

As always, customize to your child, your family, your homeschooling methodology 😉

Hope you are having a lovely holiday week.

Until Next Time,
…Shannon
